The Institute of Environmental Science and Engineering (IESE) was created as a centre of research excellence in environmental technology (ET), under the Nanyang Technological University. With its corporatisation to a commercial research company, it is now structured as a leading-edge technology organisation that provides value-added research and commercialization services in ET.
IESE's research capability is built on four technology platforms: Clean Energy, Marine & Resource Recovery, Water & Membrane, and Environmental Biotechnology. The business activities include technology licensing / commercialisation, R&D, environmental process design/engineering, environmental specialist consultancy, process modeling/simulation, feasibility/treatability studies as well as technology-related conferences.
Singapore is known to have an exemplary record in environmental management, strong
intellectual property framework, first-class technology

infrastructure and commitment to
excellence in R&D as well as for its global connectivity.
The Environmental Technology (ET) sector, in particular, is enjoying strong growth in Asia.
To meet our national environmental sustainability needs and to promote this vibrant industry,
Singapore aims to become a Global Hydrohub, accounting for 3 - 5 percent of the global
water industry by 2018. In addition, it also strives to become a leading provider and
sophisticated user of Alternative Energy products and services.
From a regional perspective, Singapore is well-placed to establish a leadership role in the
environmental technology market which has been projected to grow into a multi-billion dollar
business.
In support of Singapore’s strategic priority to become a leader in the ET market, the Institute
of Environmental Science and Engineering (IESE) was created as a centre of research
excellence to advance the state-of-the-art in environmental science and engineering.
